Local Mission Plan

Our Local Mission Plan sets out what Troon Church of Scotland aspires to achieve in the life and work of our congregation. It was last updated and adopted by the Kirk Session on 5th September 2024.

The Five Marks of Mission

The mission of the Church is the mission of Christ:

  1. To proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom
  2. To teach, baptise and nurture new believers
  3. To respond to human need by loving service
  4. To seek to transform unjust structures of society, to challenge violence of every kind and pursue peace and reconciliation
  5. To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth

1. To proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom

We will

  • offer varied worship services, styles and times in different venues in person and online
  • engage with children, youth and young families, to enable opportunities to create relationships
  • engage with unchurched 50+ years old people, to enable opportunities to create relationships
  • engage ecumenically via, for example, Messy Church and Troon Churches Together (TCT)
  • reach out and engage with the community and community events such as Wintertainment, local sports clubs, holiday clubs, Doors Open Day, etc
  • reach out through school chaplaincy and adult Christian education courses
  • use technology to improve communication with members and the community
  • remain committed to developing a Local Mission Church with essential community engagement in north east Troon

2. To teach, baptise and nurture new believers

We will

  • nurture and encourage adults in the Christian faith through Bible Study, Prayer Group, House Groups, Book Group, pre-membership classes, etc
  • nurture and encourage young people in the Christian faith through storytelling, craft activities, youth organisations, school chaplaincies, and formal youth education
  • support Girls’ Brigade and Boys’ Brigade

3. To respond to human need by loving service

We will

  • support identified needs, for example Babies & Toddlers Group, Seniors Group, Drop-in Café, Bereavement Support group
  • provide fellowship opportunities, for example the Guild, Friendship Group, Walking Group
  • support partner organisations catering for identified needs, for example Foodbank, addiction support groups
  • continue support and develop partnerships and links with Malawi, Dr Graham’s Homes in Kalimpong, Queenstown South Africa, Church House in Bridgeton, and elsewhere
  • encourage links with CrossReach and Church of Scotland missionary partners
  • support the development and expansion of third sector partnership working and involvement with other agencies
  • review pastoral care and how visits are carried out, looking at alternative and mixed approaches
  • actively support all identified pastoral care needs, including of those housebound and those in Care/Nursing Homes

4. To seek to transform unjust structures of society, to challenge violence of every kind and pursue peace and reconciliation

We will

  • actively support local and national/international charities promoting those which are ‘church’ charities such as Christian Aid, and support other initiatives and campaigns brought to our attention by the national Church
  • explore support for victims of poverty/abuse/isolation through projects
  • support charities including educating and informing members on topical issues and needs

5. To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth

We will

  • recycle church waste and encourage environmentally friendly recycling of waste through our example
  • reduce our carbon footprint using modern and energy saving devices and resources
  • improve the energy performance of buildings, for example by optimising insulation and draught exclusion
  • explore the use of Solar, Wind and Ground Heat energy sources
